About StarPals

StarPals is a small independent project with a big goal: using astronomy as a medium for global connection and world peace.  We believe that by encouraging an interest in the cosmos, the one thing that is truly Universal, from a young age, students will a) increase their knowledge of and interest in science and b) learn valuable teamwork and life skills.  Our goal is simple: to provide opportunities for international collaboration between students of all ages, centered around astronomical themes.

The focus is on teamwork and international communication, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity among all StarPals participants, whether students, teachers, or mentors.  StarPals aims to inspire students by providing an avenue to explore and to share their creativity, learn about astronomy, and take on the role of research scientist.

We have three core projects at this stage: Tour of the Universe by Children of the WorldStarParks, and StarPal Teams/StarPal*I*Teams.  These Projects are carried out through the website www.StarPals.org as task-based Missions.

In addition to the projects, we issue Challenges focusing on different topics in line with the mission of StarPals.  Some are creative, some are scientific, and others are activism-based.  StarPals Challenges range from simple one-day missions like the Globe At Night star count to more complex projects complete with detailed instructions, coaching, and finder charts.

We also offer programs for teachers that would like to include our projects in their classrooms, along with lesson plans and materials for a modular After School Astronomy Club (if you would like to assist us with this project, please let us know!).  We assist and encourage all participating schools, whether or not involved with the After School Astronomy program, to partner with a sister school in another country.  We will offer online workshops and “webinars” to teach the teachers.
