Today I got a cool note from the mayor of Chicago! Hand-signed and sealed... pretty cool!
He says:
Just a note to thank you for sending me your photos and the copy of the November 2008 National Geographic Magazine regarding light pollution. Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated.

My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday... I said, "Hubby, can you get this packet directly to the Mayor's office?" He hand delivered (by police escort) straight to the mayor's office receptionist... on my birthday! The sweetie.
The mayor received 3 very large photos of Chicago during the 1-hr lights out during Earth Hour. A letter explaining how the street light travels all the way up the high rises while throwing off glare to the pedestrians and drivers... and suggestions of lighting insets for the steps instead of huge over-kill lighting, and other suggestions.
I am so happy with his response. How he choses to deal with it now, is his executive decision. But awareness and education is the first step toward change.
